Park History
This year, 2012, West Blount County Park will be celebrating 37 years of providing sports for the kids in our community.
In 1975, a group of dedicated people were determined to build a place for the children in the community to have a field of their own.
The initial board of directors were
- President Margie Glover
- Vice President Gerald Graves
- Secretary Faye Johnson
- Treasurer Vera Graves
Also included on the initial board were James Buckner, W.R. Ellis, Grady Gaither, Don Garrett, Marcell Holt, Jack Johnson, Jerry McCullar, Paul Moore, Phil Niblett, James Partain, O.D. Smith, and G.C. Thomas. In addition to these, the Baseball Association and Ladies Auxiliary were a vital part for the success of establishing the park. They received the assistance of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Outdoor Section as a cooperative project for the Outdoor Recreation and also from the Blount County Commission. The people and agencies worked very hard to have a field ready for play in 1976. Through the years, the leadership changed but the determination instilled by this group of people continued by adding 3 more playing fields, a larger concession stand, and a playground.
Baseball was the first sport to be played and now the park offers baseball, softball, basketball, football, soccer, and cheerleading.
Park Board meetings are open to the public and are held every third Monday of the month at the Hayden Elementary School lunchroom.
